Effect of Citicoline on Retention of Memory in Mice

Abstract:
Using Morris water maze, the effect of citicoline on the memory performance was examined in mice.
At first, forty ICR male mice at 8 weeks of age were subjected to a training to learn how to reach the platform (PF). By total 18 times training, 6 times on the first day and 12 times on the second day, almost all the mice could reach the PF within 20 sec.
The mice were then randomly divided into 2 groups. Commercial diet CE2 was given to one group, the control group, and the diet containing 2% citicoline mixed in CE2 was given to another group. The animals were fed the diet for 4 weeks, without having any training (swimming).
After the completion of the feeding period, the mice were forced to swim for 1 min in Morris water maze without PF. The swimming route was recorded by the video camera.
As the result, the escape latency (the time for reaching and crossing over at the former PF position) was found shorter in the mice given citicoline than in the control mice, and in the mice given citicoline, the frequency of crossing-over at the former PF position within 60 seconds tended to be increased compared with the control mice.
These results suggested that citicoline enhanced the retention of memory in mice.
